Choosing PCB Materials for High-Frequency Designs

Hi everyone,

I’ve been looking into PCB material selection for high-frequency circuits, and one thing I’m curious about is how much the material choice affects real-world performance compared with careful layout and impedance control.

FR-4 can work for many designs, but at higher frequencies, factors such as dielectric loss, dielectric constant (Dk), and consistency of material properties become increasingly important. I came across some technical information from PCBCool while exploring this topic, which got me thinking about the practical trade-offs.

For those who have designed RF, microwave, or other high-frequency PCBs, how do you decide when standard FR-4 is sufficient and when it’s worth moving to a specialized low-loss laminate?

Do you primarily consider the operating frequency, insertion loss, budget, or the requirements of the overall design?

I’d be interested to hear what has worked for you in actual projects.
