in my local copy, for the text element that contains the “A” I removed every character separating the tag from the tag and Inkscape works fine, as for the “B” (that still is as the tool leaves it), there is text (spaces) before and after the element, because of the “pretty printing” linefeed+indentation.
And that’s because every character in a element is part of the text itself, so it’s working as it should…
My current version removes tspans (I see no use for them and Fritzing used to screw up on nested tspans) but I don’t think that is in the original code (although it is 6 years old now so it may be!)

No, it isn’t finished. It really needs a complete rewrite but that is going very slowly.
